Polarcus XArray™ is an innovative acquisition configuration developed by Polarcus to deliver superior data quality and make full use of today’s larger streamer spreads. XArray™ improves both in-line shots by 100% - 250% and cross-line bin density by up to 400% on any streamer separation and can therefore be tailored to provide higher fold data, increase cross line sampling and/or improve acquisition efficiency.

Multi-Vessel Surveys

Purpose

 

To allow multi-vessel seismic operations without the negative impact of seismic interference. New processing techniques can effectively remove seismic interference contamination, meaning surveys can be acquired with more than one seismic vessel operating simultaneously. Each vessel tows an identical configuration and the vessels acquire data in a coordinated manner, maintaining predetermined distances apart so that the seismic interference can be removed at the processing
stage.

 

Benefits

 

  • Reduction in survey time and increased production rate, particularly beneficial in remote and/or environmentally sensitive areas where there is a small window of opportunity to complete the project
  • Large surveys are acquired faster resulting in less cost to the client even with additional vessels

Continuous Acquisition Mode

Purpose

 

To allow optimization of shot interval, vessel speed and record length. All vessels in the Polarcus fleet are equipped with Seal 428 recording systems enabling data to be recorded continuously. This continuous recording technology records the data in five-second segments which can then be concentrated into any record length to meet the client’s geophysical objectives.

 

Benefits

 

  • The shot point interval can be reduced to increase in-line shot density
  • Allows the shotpoint interval to be independent of vessel speed and record length
  • Enables deeper events to be imaged with longer record lengths, particularly useful in deep water programs where the top of each seismic record is ambient noise, not containing any seismic data
  • The vessel speed can be increased which means the acquisition program can be completed in a shorter time, providing
    cost and time savings

Streamer Sensitivity Normalization

 

Purpose

 

To extract relative variations in streamer acoustic sensitivities from field data amplitude statistics allowing normalization of the entire receiver spread and significantly improving relative amplitude preservation. Polarcus’ streamer section relative amplitude measurement can now be as accurate as +/-0.1dB, which is 15 times more accurate than industry standard +/-1.5dB.

 

Benefits

 

  • The recording system footprint is identified as a separate source of noise within the acquisition footprint and can now be corrected for by using Polarcus’ Streamer Sensitivity Normalization technique
  • Accurate measurements of streamer section sensitivity during the acquisition stage allows appropriate amplitude corrections to be applied before any processing is carried out
  • The wide dynamic range provided by modern 24-bit streamer systems allows relative sensitivity corrections to be accurately applied in a range beyond the traditionally accepted +/- 1.5 dB
  • Improved streamer spread management – saving time on streamer reconfiguration, advanced planning of spread

Infill Management

Purpose

 

To calculate required infill based on pre-stack migration requirements, rather than on surface-derived CMP coverage plots, so that only relevant data is acquired according to the client’s geophysical objectives. Polarcus’ survey design team calculates the Fresnel zones of target horizons, determined by depth, frequency and offset. The survey is acquired by steering on preplotted shot lines and fanning steerable streamers. Working closely with our clients, we ensure that any areas of reduced CMP coverage due to environmental effects are analyzed before infill, to determine the required input to the migration.

 

Benefits

 

  • Significantly reducing infill, resulting in survey cost savings
  • Reduced survey times, so that surveys in remote areas with limited acquisition windows of opportunity can be acquired
    in one season
  • Easier replication for future 4D monitor surveys, by acquiring the survey with a regular base grid of shot locations
  • Excellent near trace coverage achieved by steering sources on preplots

Broadband Solutions

 

Purpose

 

To optimize the imaging of target geologic horizons, by tuning the seismic source and receivers to the appropriate frequency band, utilizing a source to streamer depth relationship that best avoids ghost notch coincidence and delivers an optimized de-ghosted broadband volume. This is described as Polarcus’ RightBAND™ technique for broadband data acquisition. For each survey the towing configuration is designed to enhance the expected bandwidth at the targets and to maximize signalto-noise at the receiver ghost notch frequencies in preparation for pre-stack de-ghosting.

  • Frequency bandwidth is optimized, especially at the low frequencies, with an ultra-quiet recording environment using X-BOW® vessels and 2 Hz true solid streamer cables

Pre-survey Source Comparison Tests

Purpose

 

To utilize precisely designed “center weighted” broadband seismic energy sources, that provide the minimum acoustic signal level to achieve high quality recorded seismic data for a particular geologic and acoustic propagation environment. Comparing different source array volumes during survey mobilization allows our clients to choose the right source design to satisfy the geophysical objectives and environmental constraints. The test is carried out during equipment deployment
and is quick to complete, with a fast turnaround of results.

 

Benefits

  

  • Source levels can be constrained to meet the signal-to-nose requirements of each particular survey. In many cases, bigger is not necessarily better
  • Only the sound energy required to meet the geophysical objectives of the survey is emitted into the local environment

Survey Design

Purpose

 

To balance geological requirements with operational efficiency, taking into account the full data sequence of time processing, imaging and final interpretation products. Intended results are fit-for-purpose, cost-effective surveys which utilize all available technology.
